These designs are “kalam Kari,” a term that refers both to a style and to a very ancient printing technique that involves applying colors using hand-carved wooden blocks—formerly styluses. There are as many blocks as there are colors, and it’s worth noting that all the colors are made from natural pigments—such as pomegranate and seeds—that have been fermented. Applied using the blocks—which function like stamps—these colors are only revealed once the fabric is washed in river water. The fabric is then dried in the sun. Depending on the quality of the water—which must be “neither too sweet nor too bland,” as they say—the intensity of the sun, and the season—monsoon or not—the pattern will vary. This is a craft that has been passed down from generation to generation. Today, it’s Nanni who oversees the workshops—Nanni, who put his computer engineering studies on hold to take over from his father a few years ago. Nanni, who is fighting to ensure that this craft remains intact and endures.
