These motifs are “kalam Kari”, a term that designates both a style and an ancient printing technique involving the application of colors using hand-carved wooden blocks - formerly called styli. There are as many blocks as there are colors, but all the colors are made from natural pigments - pomegranate, seeds, etc. - that have been fermented. Applied using the blocks - which function like stamps - these colors are only revealed when the fabric is washed in river water. The fabric then dries in the sun. Depending on the quality of the water - which must be “neither too sweet nor not sweet enough”, they say - the intensity of the sun, the season - monsoon or not - the pattern will be different. It's a skill that has been handed down from generation to generation.
